Constraints are conditions coaches place on their small-sided games or other training practices in order to provide specific, game-related challenges to their players. A constraints-led approach (Newell, 1986) has become a coaching 'buzzword' over the past two decades, as the use of small and medium-sized games has increased. This course will introduce and analyze the concept of 'constraints' and discuss how to get the most from this powerful training approach.
In this Course:
- Introduction to Constraints-Led Coaching
- 21 Small Sided Games Handbook
- 21 Small Sided Games Animation video explainers
Why join the Course?
The course will greatly improve your ability to analyze the requirements of soccer and then design highly effective training practices and SSGs using a constraints-led approach.
What topics will you cover?
The course begins with a youth training example at a English Premier League club and uses it to introduce the concept of 'constraints'. Next, the three types of constraints, namely organism (individual), task and environment are defined and explained. Plenty of examples are provided which can easily be incorporated into your team's training program.
What will you achieve?
Upon completion of this course, you will have gained a clearer understanding of adapted small-sided games and how to expertly construct them to develop specific skills in your players. Each course attendee will receive an attendance certificate and our 21 Small Sided Games Handbook.
Who is the course for?
Any youth soccer coach who may be unfamiliar with the topic. Beginner, intermediate and expert coaches can all gain something from this topical course.
